FAQ - Guided Cave Tours Questions and answers about the cave visit

On our FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions) you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding your visit to the Dachstein Cave World with the Dachstein Ice cave, Mammut cave and Koppenbrüller cave in the wonderful Salzkammergut.

How do I get to Giant Ice Cave?

You will need to take the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car along section 1 to the middle station Schönbergalm. The walk / hike to the cave entrance from here follows a route which is partly asphalted. Altitude difference 70 m.

  • Cable car: section 1 | Schönbergalm
  • Duration walk to the Cave entrance: 15 to 20 min
  • Duration guided cave tour: approx. 50 minutes
  • Tour route: 800 m long, 80 m height difference (steps)

How do I get to the Mammut cave?

You will need to take the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car along section 1 to the middle station Schönbergalm. The walk / hike to the cave entrance from here follows a gravel path. Altitude difference 40 m.

  • Cable car: section 1 | Schönbergalm
  • Duration walk to the Cave entrance: 15 to 20 min
  • Duration guided cave tour: approx. 50 minutes
  • Tour route: 800 m long, 70 m height difference (steps)

Participants of cave trekking tours in the Mammut cave meets the cave guide at the ticket counter in the Schönbergalm (middle station).

Do I have to register for the guided cave tours? Yes, you have to register for the guided cave tours on 

at the cave ticket counter in the Schönbergalm (middle station). 

Where is the cave ticket counter located?
Cave ticket counter ist located in the middle station of Dachstein Krippenstein cable car, in the entrance area of Schönbergalm Nature Park (to the left of the sliding door).

For individuals and small groups up to 20 people no pre-registration by phone is required!

How do I get to the Koppenbrüller cave?

The Koppenbrüller Cave is located in the valley, on the edge of Obertraun. A romantic woodland trail along the river Traun will take you to the cave entrance in no time.

  • Location: in the valley
  • Duration guided tour: approx. 45 minutes
  • Tour route: 700 m long, 40 m height difference (steps)

Registration guided cave tour?

Do I have to register for the guided cave tours? Yes, you have to register for the guided cave tour in the

at the cave ticket counter of the Koppenbrüller Cave in the valley.

Cave ticket counter ist located in the entrance area of the Koppenbrüller cave (wooden hut).

For individuals and small groups up to 20 people no pre-registration by phone is required!

Are tours held in other languages too?

Yes, of course. All tours are available in German and English. On request, guided tours for groups can be held in further languages. Please contact for further information on guided group tours in other languages

What should I wear in the cave?

The caves may only be visited if accompanied by an experienced guide. Wear robust shoes and warm clothing to ensure you enjoy your cave experience to the full! Temperatures:

  • Giant Ice Cave -2°C
  • Mammut Cave +3°C 
  • Koppenbrüller Cave +6 °C

From what age may children visit the caves?

There is no lower age limit for children visiting the Dachstein caves (Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, Mammut Cave, Koppenbrüller Cave)! KIDS are welcome!

What about my dog?

Dogs are required to wear a muzzle and use of dog leashes. Dogs wearing a muzzle and using dog leashes are permitted on the cable car. Of course, as a responsible dog owner you also make sure that

  • your dog does not hunt anything or anyone,
  • you remove the dog's legacy and take it with you
  • and you always have enough water for your dog during your hike.
