Mountain cinema at the Schönbergalm

A movie night like you can only experience at Dachstein Krippenstein

When the sky above the Schönbergalm begins to glow in vibrant shades of orange and red, you already know: This is going to be a very special evening. That’s exactly how this year’s Mountain Cinema at Dachstein Krippenstein kicked off—with silent cinema, a cult classic, and an atmosphere that simply can’t be replicated down in the valley.

Originally, the open-air event was planned for the Krippenstein at 2,100 m, but due to the weather, the cinema was quickly moved to the Schönbergalm. A decision that turned out to be a stroke of luck: The Schönbergalm’s natural “mountain basin” made the silent cinema a particularly atmospheric experience.

An immersive movie experience

Shortly after sunset, rental headphones were handed out, lounge chairs were arranged, and blankets were pulled up over people’s legs. Thanks to the silent cinema system, everyone could enjoy the film in top-notch sound quality—without any loud speakers, but surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains.

The film of the evening: “Dirty Dancing”—romance, music, and arguably the most famous dance finale in film history. As the sky grew darker, the Schönbergalm transformed into a cinematic world where you could briefly forget everything else.

Snuggled up in blankets – A movie theater experience in the mountains

Deck chairs were set up on site, along with warm blankets handed out by our team. Many guests also brought their own blankets or even sleeping bags and made themselves comfortable on the grass or in a deck chair.

As the evening wore on, the mountain air grew noticeably cooler—a true summer evening on the Dachstein Krippenstein. But those who had snuggled up were still able to enjoy the movie right through to the final dance. It was precisely this combination of fresh mountain air, a starry sky, and warm blankets that made the mountain movie theater so special.

Snacks, drinks, and spontaneous cinema guests

Of course, snacks and drinks are also part of the perfect movie night. At the Schönbergalm, both non-alcoholic beverages and drinks for evening enjoyment were available, along with typical movie snacks for those little hunger pangs in between.

Another nice touch: It wasn’t just people with tickets bought in advance who were there. Last-minute visitors could still secure tickets right on the spot and join in on the movie night with no hassle. This created a colorful mix of regulars at the Dachstein Krippenstein, mountain enthusiasts, and movie fans.

Behind-the-Scenes: From detup to the special gondola

What guests hardly notice: Behind a successful event are many helping hands. The collaboration with the Silent Cinema team went off without a hitch—from setting up in the afternoon to taking everything down right after the movie ended.

After the credits rolled, everything was packed up quickly and efficiently so that everyone could comfortably return to the valley together on a special gondola operated by the cable car company. And so the evening ended just as atmospherically as it had begun—with a view into the darkness above Lake Hallstatt and the lights in the valley.
