Between winter & summer: What the mountain crew do during the maintenance period?

A question many people ask. What do the mountain railway employees at Dachstein Krippenstein do during the maintenance period? The answer: They work tirelessly to ensure that everything is ready for the start of the season. While many are already thinking about their first spring outings, preparations are in full swing at Dachstein Krippenstein. Because what appears calm at first glance is actually an intense work phase:

  • Maintenance: Facilities are inspected, serviced, and prepared for the summer. At the same time, our ski lifts are “put into winter storage.”

  • Caves: The caves are being prepared for the coming season—walkways and stairs are being installed, and technical equipment inside the caves is being checked and tested.

  • At Krippenstein at 2,100 m: The paths to the viewing platforms, such as the 5fingers, are cleared of snow so that the first routes are accessible again in time for the start of the season.

Step by step, the foundation for summer operations is laid—even if there’s still snow at 2,100 m ;-).

Maintenance work

Maintenance is a key part of the cable cars' annual cycle. After the intense winter months, all facilities are thoroughly inspected, serviced, and repaired. This isn’t just about the technology—it’s primarily about safety.

At the same time, this maintenance serves as preparation for summer operations—so that guests can later enjoy the Dachstein Krippenstein without a care in the world.

The caves

Pre-season preparations are now underway in the caves as well. Following the winter break, installation work and technical inspections are on the agenda. Walkways, lighting, and safety equipment are being checked and replaced as needed.

Work in the caves requires particular care—amidst consistently cool temperatures and challenging conditions, everything is being prepared to ensure a safe visit.

Snow Removal

While spring is arriving down in the valley, there are still meters of snow on the mountain. Paths to popular viewing platforms like the 5fingers, in particular, need to be cleared once again.

Using snow blowers, manpower, and plenty of experience, the mountain crew is making steady progress. Every section cleared brings summer a little closer—and clears the way for unforgettable views and mountain moments.
